Gemma Bond

Freelance choreographer | Former dancer with The Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre

Gemma Bond is a world-renowned choreographer and former American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet dancer. Born in Bedfordshire, England, Bond began her training with Sylvia Bebbs. Bond joined The Royal Ballet in 2000, and was promoted to First Artist in 2003. In 2008, she joined ABT as a member of the corps de ballet. She has danced works by choreographers such as George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, and Frederick Ashton. Bond created featured roles in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, as well as in Liam Scarlett’s With a Chance of Rain


Bond began choreographing when she competed in The Royal Ballet School Sir Kenneth Macmillan Choreographic Competition at the age of 13. Since 2010, she has created pieces for ABT, Atlanta Ballet, The Washington Ballet, and Ballet National de Cuba. Bond’s choreography has been performed at the Erik Bruhn Competition, Jacob’s Pillow, and the Youth America Grand Prix Gala. She has received grants from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, and was awarded the fellowship grant from the New York Choreographic Institute in 2014. Bond was also a recipient of prestigious awards such as a Princess Grace choreographic scholarship in 2017, and won the Clives Barnes Award for Choreography in 2018 and a Bessie for outstanding breakout choreographer in 2020. Bond’s ballets continue in the repertory of major companies, and she is active in initiatives to support new choreography. 



Gemma will be teaching all levels during Weeks 2 and 3 of MDT’s 2025 Summer Program. In addition, she will host an adult choreographic workshop and showcase at MDT on June 21, 2025, Steps & Sips.
